Airport Security Upgrade Plan To Deal With Possible Bomb Threats | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Odisha police have initiated a comprehensive plan to bolster security measures at the small and regional airports by strengthening the specialised bomb detection and disposal squads (BDDS) to enhance preparedness against potential threats.
Under this plan, advanced equipment will be procured for security personnel at five regional airports located in Jeypore, Rourkela, Rangeilunda, Utkela and Malkangiri.
State govt has allocated around Rs 12.19 crore to police for purchasing sophisticated clothing and gadgets like bomb disposal suits, explosive vapour detectors, explosive trace detectors, under-vehicle search mirrors, real-time viewing systems, non-linear junction detectors, blast inhibitors, baggage X-ray machines and fibre optics surveillance devices.
Biju Patnaik International Airport here and VSS Airport at Jharsuguda are not included under the project as they are looked after by the CISF.
“The move for procuring the latest equipment for airport security is currently in the bidding stage. The proposal, spearheaded by senior officials of Odisha police, comes in response to growing concerns over aviation security and the need for state-of-the-art technology to counter bomb threats and handle explosive devices efficiently,” a senior police officer told TOI.
Police officers emphasised the importance of equipment in effectively detecting and disposing of explosives. They also stressed that only vendors meeting the rigorous quality and safety standards set by the police and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) will be considered, ensuring the reliability and durability of procured equipment.
Officers said the handheld real-time viewing system (RTVS) is considered a crucial tool for airport security. A compact, portable X-ray machine, it can be carried by an individual and is designed to capture digital 16-bit X-ray images on the spot, enabling the detection of detonators and explosive materials concealed in suspicious boxes or enclosed items.
“With the influx of tourists and an increase in air traffic in Odisha, the need for robust airport security has become paramount. In recent years, airports have become high-priority areas for security agencies worldwide, and Odisha is no exception.
By investing in advanced bomb detection and disposal technologies, the state aims to stay ahead of potential threats and ensure that its airports remain safe for all,” the officer said.
