Balangir: Three minor girls died and their father is in serious condition after they were bitten by a venomous snake at Cheruapali village in Boudh district, late on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Suravi (3), Subharekha (12) and Sudhirekha (13). Their father Sailendra Mallik was shifted from the district headquarters hospital in Boudh to Vimsar, Burla, for further treatment.
Reports claimed the incident occurred late on Sunday when the family went to bed after having dinner. A venomous snake entered the house and bit the three sisters who were sleeping on the cot. Later, it also attacked Sailendra.
A sudden sharp pain awoke Sailendra who found Suravi lying unconscious and his other two daughters crying out in pain.
“My brother and me along with some villagers took the girls to the hospital. Two of my daughters were declared dead and later the other daughter also succumbed to the snakebite. Doctor referred me to Burla for further treatment,” said Sailendra. However, he could not confirm the type of snake that had bitten them.
Keshab Kishor Nayak, a retired forest range officer said an adult king cobra can bite as many as 10 persons and kill them within an hour due to the neurotoxic venom it carries. “It is possible that the girls and their father may have been bitten by a king cobra. The venom type can be confirmed after autopsy,” Nayak said.
