Sambalpur: There has been a 33% increase in road accidents in Sambalpur district till July this year compared to the same period last year, data from the regional transport office (RTO) revealed. The number of accidents reported from Jan to July this year touched 326, up from 244 in the same period in 2023.
As many as 140 people died in accidents this year.The number of fatal accidents has also gone up, with an average of 22 per month. In 2023, 111 accidents were fatal. Till June this year, 411 people sustained severe injuries in road accidents.
In response to concerns about road safety, authorities have stepped up measures to curb traffic violations.
From Jan to July this year, 3,001 cases of speeding and 246 cases of drunk driving were registered.
Sambalpur collector Siddeshwar Baliram Bondar held a meeting with the district road safety committee on Saturday. At the meeting, strategies on repairing highways, addressing parking issues, removing tree branches obstructing roads and ensuring proper drainage on state and national highways were discussed.
Sambalpur RTO Ramdas Tudu told TOI, “There will be awareness programmes in schools. We are instructing hospitals to treat accident cases as emergencies. We are also using technology to enforce speed limits.”
