Bhubaneswar: Amid a bird flu threat in the state, the price of fish in Bhubaneswar has increased substantially, with prawn and crab rates going up by 20-30%. Fish markets across the city were buzzing with customers on Sunday as vendors struggled to meet the demand, despite the hike in prices.
“Chicken and egg are my children’s favourite non-vegetarian items and they are also a good source of protein. But after the bird flu scare, we are avoiding those items as a precautionary measure,” Bhagirathi Panda, a resident of Sastri Nagar, said.
Even the price of mutton has gone up by Rs 100 per kg.
“Prawn, crab and mutton are usually considered delicacies and cooked on special occasions. But with the unavailability of chicken, we are forced to buy them no matter how high the cost is. I bought hilsa at Rs 2,200 per kg from the Unit-IV market. Last week, it was around Rs 1,800 per kg,” Manoranjan Swain, another customer, said.
An advisory was issued by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation on Saturday to chicken traders not to procure from areas with bird flu cases.
“Though chicken is being sold at Rs 180 per kg instead of Rs 220 per kg since last week, customers are not buying them, even though chickens are being brought from areas not affected by bird flu,” Sahajan Khan, a vendor in the city, said.
