Kendrapada: Twenty-two cases of scrub typhus have been identified in villages of Mahakalapada, Pattamundai and Aul blocks in Kendrapada district since Aug 1. Altogether 440 blood samples had been tested at the district headquarters hospital in Kendrapada. “The administration is taking necessary steps to prevent further spread of the disease,” said Anita Patnaik, chief district medical and public health officer (CDM &PHO) of Kendrapada.
Initially, the affected villagers were thought to be suffering from cold and fever. However, it has now been discovered that scrub typhus is spreading in the villages. In response, the health officer has formed an emergency team of doctors to treat all the affected individuals.
To educate the vulnerable population about the disease, health officials have initiated awareness campaigns. “We have stocked sufficient medicines in all CHCs to treat patients,” said Patnaik.
Scrub typhus, also known as bush typhus, is caused by the bacteria Orientia Tsutsugamushi and is primarily transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mites called chiggers. These mites are commonly found in dense forests and tall grasses near water bodies.
