BJP: BJP’s Mamata Mohanta elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: BJP’s Mamata Mohanta was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from the state on Tuesday.
BJD and Congress had not nominated any candidate for the election to the Upper House. Jagannath Pradhan, a prominent BJP member, had submitted his nomination as an Independent candidate.
Sources said his candidacy served as a contingency plan for the BJP, ensuring they had a backup option in case any issues arose with its official candidate’s nomination papers.
However, Pradhan withdrew his nomination on Tuesday, the final day. Following his withdrawal, Mohanta was officially declared the winner for the RS byelection from the seat she had vacated as a BJD member.
“I am thankful to the party leadership for reposing faith in me and sending me to the august House once again. I will utilise every moment to serve the people of Odisha and the party,” Mohanta said. She will have a tenure of 20 months in the RS till April 2026, the remainder of the six-year term.
Chief minister Mohan Majhi, several ministers and MLAs congratulated Mohanta on her victory.
