Bhubaneswar: Temples across Bhubaneswar teemed with devotees while children dressed as Lord Krishna were a common sight in the streets on Monday as part of Janmashtami celebrations across state. Special rituals were conducted at Jagannath Temple in Puri where a special prasad, deula bhoga, was prepared and offered to the deities.
Governor Raghubar Das, and chief minister Mohan Majhi also greeted people on the occasion.“Wishing a happy Janmashtami to the people of Odisha. May Lord Krishna’s blessings be always upon you and your family, Das said.
Majhi on X said, “My best wishes to all on the occasion of Janmashtami and may the lord fill people’s lives with happiness and prosperity.”
Temples across city were beautifully decorated with flowers, lights and colourful rangolis as the devotees offered puja. “Janmashtami is a major festival for us. We offer an array of sweet dishes to the lord and keep miniature swing sets ready,” Lopamudra Sahu, a devotee, said.
Community pandals were also put up to observe Nanda Utsav at several places across the city.
Celebrations began early in the morning with devotees taking a holy dip in rivers and offering puja at home. Many people observed fast and broke it only after midnight, believed to be the time of Lord Krishna’s birth.
Children dressed as goddess Radha and Lord Krishna took part in fancy dress competitions while they also chanted slokas and showcased their talent on stage.
Iskcon temple at Nayapalli in the city attracted large number of devotees for Janmashtami celebration.
Janmashtami also marked the beginning of preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja festival in October. On this day, community puja pandals in the city brought soil scooped out from the banks of the Kuakhai river, which is considered sacred.
This soil, known as ‘Panchuka Mati,’ is used in preparing the idol of goddess Durga.
“The soil from the riverbanks is considered as auspicious and believed to be blessed by divine energies of our rivers. The event marks the beginning of the Durga Puja celebration as construction of idols of Goddess Durga will begin with the soil,” said Sachi Nandan Nayak, secretary of Saheed Nagar Durga Puja Samiti.
