Cong objects to Nikam’s appointment as special PP – Times of India
Thane: Congress on Wednesday opposed the appointment of senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam as the special public prosecutor in the Badlapur sexual abuse case, alleging that his ties to BJP could hinder proceedings.
Vijay Wadettiwar, leader of the opposition in the assembly, claimed that the school belongs to BJP functionaries, adding that Nikam had contested the LS polls on a BJP ticket.”How can justice be expected when he represents the [victims] and the people running the school are linked to BJP?” asked Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad. State Congress president Nana Patole claimed in Badlapur that “those with RSS ideology” run the school. He said CCTV cameras of the school were destroyed to avoid bringing disrepute to it and alleged the involvement of police personnel in this.
Rebutting the charges, BJP’s Chitra Wagh said the school is one of the oldest in Badlapur and all parties’ functionaries are associated with it.
In Nikam’s defence, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam said his ability to fight the case should not be questioned simply because he was a BJP candidate.
