Students Union Elections: Students union elections to be held next year in colleges and universities | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Students union elections could be held in degree colleges and universities from next year, law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said at a meeting in Jajpur on Monday.
“Normally, election is conducted in the first week of September. We do not have much time to prepare for the students union elections this year. That’s why arrangements will be made in higher education institutions this year before holding the elections next year,” Harichandan said.
If held next year, campus elections would be conducted after a gap of eight years. The last elections were held in 2017. Since then, polls had been cancelled by the previous govt on one reason or the other. This had resulted in protests from students.
Students welcomed the law minister’s announcement and said they would begin preparations in right earnest.
Udit Pradhan of NSUI said the govt did not conduct the election this year because ABVP is not ready. “We are prepared to fight the campus election if it is conducted this year,” Pradhan said.
Arijit Patnaik, state secretary of ABVP, said they are ready to contest the students union election this year.
