Chhapra: Saran MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy has raised the issue of rising airfares in Lok Sabha. Rudy, a pilot who previously served as civil aviation minister, spoke in support of the Bhartiya Vayuyan Vidheyak Bill 2024 that seeks to remove redundancies and replace the Aircraft Act, 1934. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Rudy said under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA govt, private players were allowed into the civil aviation sector, which had previously been dominated by govt-owned companies like Air India and Indian Airlines.
Rudy also stressed the need for an international greenfield airport in Bihar. He said Bihar currently has only one international airport, Jayaprakash Narayan Airport in Patna, which lacks international flights due to its short runway. “Despite the govt’s expenditure of Rs 1,600 crore, no significant improvements have been made. Bihar needs a new airport,” he said, suggesting setting up of a greenfield airport near Patna to resolve the issue of the short runway and ensure safer journeys for passengers.
