Digital Database: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation to Create Digital Database for City Expansion | Bhubaneswar News

With eye on capital city’s expansion, civic body to create digital database

Bhubaneswar: To optimize planning in anticipation of the state capital’s expansion over the next decade, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has devised a strategy to establish a comprehensive digital database of the city.
The database will encompass all roads, drains, and utilities such as drainage and sewerage systems, utilising GIS technology. The GIS map will also incorporate data pertaining to optical fiber networks, utility pipes, transmission cables, as well as water bodies.
The civic body will further capture the data of public spaces like temples, mosques, bus stops, post offices, schools, colleges, universities, shops, police stations, banks, parks, hospitals, and additional relevant infrastructure in the database periodically.
To generate the GIS map, the civic body has issued a tender, soliciting experts in the IT domain to conduct surveys and design the system. If all goes as per plan, the database will be ready in the next three months, officials said.
“The main aim is to maintain a comprehensive record of the city’s assets and ensure their timely repair and management in the future. The digital database will help us monitor the assets on a real-time basis,” stated city mayor Sulochana Das.
According to the plan, the initial phase will involve capturing data related to roads, drains, footpaths, and utilities, followed by mapping commercial areas, lakes, other water bodies, slums, and public properties such as parks and other relevant infrastructure.
People have expressed their approval of the civic body’s progressive initiative to create a digital map of the city. They say that such a map of the city at the administrative level will greatly help in maintaining the public properties.
“It is crucial for the city administration to maintain accurate records of its assets. The database will prove immensely beneficial in ensuring their proper maintenance. Let’s hope for timely completion and implementation of the project,” remarked social worker Alok Kar.
The civic body in the past had taken several steps to ensure proper planning of the city. With the advent of the smart cities mission, a portal called BhubaneswarOne was introduced, which has been providing comprehensive information about the city.
