Guesthouse: 16-year-old government guesthouse demolished due to erosion | Bhubaneswar News
Kendrapada: A 16-year-old guesthouse, hit by sea erosion and on the verge of collapse, at Saili village near Paradip port in Jagatsinghpur district was demolished on Sunday. Located 1.5km from the sea, govt authorities constructed the two-storeyed guesthouse near the beach in 2008 for tourists. “We demolished the guesthouse as its foundation was crumbling,” block development officer in Erasama, Lambodar Khuntia, said.
“Last week, we inspected the guesthouse and decided to demolish it.We had also warned locals and tourists not to come near it as it was on the verge of collapse due to the onslaught of tidal waves,” Khuntia added.
The authorities used excavators to knock down the guesthouse.
“To protect the guesthouse from tidal waves, we had put sandbags in front of it, but it did not help,” Khuntia said.
At present, around 550 families stay near the seaside in Saili, Ramatara and Kalabedi villages.
“These areas are threatened with extinction as the sea steadily erodes it. Many villagers are trying to shift from their villages to distant places from the sea,” Haripada Das of Saili said.
