Scanty July rainfall affects paddy sowing in Patna district adversely | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Weak monsoon has not only made life difficult for people, but also affected paddy sowing adversely in Patna district, with the region achieving only 44.43 % of the paddy transplantation target till Wednesday, according to Patna district agriculture office.
Against the set target of nearly 134,222 hectares of agricultural land in the district, the paddy sowing has been achieved in only 59,634 hectares (44.43%).Meanwhile, the sowing of maize in the district is a bit better. As against the set target of 4,998 hectares, maize has been sown in nearly 3,115 hectares during the same period, which is 62% of the set goal, as per the official data.
However, the paddy sowing coverage, in comparison to the last year, is still better. Notably, only 28.3% of paddy coverage was achieved till July 30 last year. “Paddy sowing should normally be completed by August 5 to 10. But we are still hopeful that things may improve in the coming days,” said an official at the agriculture office.
Paddy transplantation in Patna generally starts a bit late in comparison to other districts like West and East Champaran. “The northern districts also receive seeds ahead of Patna, and hence, sowing begins early in these places,” he said, adding, the weak monsoon is the real reason for the district’s lagging behind in sowing.
As per the official data, of the 23 blocks in Patna, only two — Dhanarua and Ghoswari have achieved little over 65% of the respective targets in paddy sowing till date. Another three blocks, including, Naubatpur, Masaurhi and Sampatchak have attained targets between 51 and 55% in the area, while the rest of the blocks are struggling to achieve even 50% of the respective targets.
Raju Paswan, a farmer from Chiksi in Paliganj, said that the weak monsoon during the paddy sowing season always had an adverse impact. “Besides increasing monetary burden on farmers, the rain deficit has also slowed down paddy sowing. The work would have been over 10 to 15 days ahead if there was a good rainfall,” he added.
