Bhubaneswar: Three automatic drain cleaning machines procured by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be deployed during monsoon, replacing excavators.
Officials said an operator can control the switch panel for automatic removal of drain covers, extracting the silt and then putting them in a container attached to the machine.
Officials said the excavators are too huge to access the narrow lanes and secondary drains, which require smaller machines.The automatic drain cleaners can access narrow streets, they added.
“While using excavators, silt brought from drains was piled up along the road. A truck would come to clear it. Also, labourers were being engaged to remove drain covers,” said a BMC officer. The move will ensure 100% mechanical cleaning of all drains.
