Sambalpur: Doctors at Vimsar, Burla, on Friday removed 70 needles from the head of a 19-year-old girl of Balangir, which were pierced by a quack to cure her frequent illness.
The victim, Reshma Behera of Inchgaon, was initially admitted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Balangir on Thursday, after complaining of severe headache. A CT scan revealed multiple needles lodged in her head. While doctors initially found around 22 needles and managed to remove 8, Reshma’s condition did not improve. Subsequently, she was referred to Vimsar.
Vimsar director B Rath said, “The surgery began around 2 am and lasted for one and a half hours. Three of our surgery specialists were involved. Thankfully, none of the needles pierced the skull, and there was no infection. The patient is out of danger but will remain under observation for at least a week.” Balangir police have arrested the quack, Tejraj Rana. Reshma’s family members said she had been keeping ill since her mother’s death four years ago and no treatment was providing her relief. In 2021, the family turned to Tejraj for help. They told police that Rana used to take Reshma into a room to provide treatment. The family only became aware of the needles pierced in her head recently when Reshma started experiencing severe pain.
