PM Narendra Modi seeks blessings from beggar who donated Rs 1 lakh to Jagannath temple in Odisha | Bhubaneswar News
BHUBANESWAR: When PM Narendra Modi bowed down before an elderly woman and touched her feet during his election meeting at Phulbani in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Saturday, most people were left surprised.
It turns out that Tula Behera, in her sixties, donated Rs 1 lakh she collected by begging to the Jagannath temple in Phulbani.
The PM later told the gathering, “When I found out about her, I got emotional.She has donated Rs 1 lakh to Jagannath temple from the amount collected by begging. If a pious soul like her comes to bless a son like me, I can feel that blessings of Kandhamal and Odisha are with me.”
When Modi asked her if she wanted any help from him, Tula said she wanted blessings of Lord Jagannath and nothing else. “When the PM touched my feet, I could not believe it. I asked why he touched an ordinary woman’s feet? He told me that I was like God to him. I blessed him to become PM again,” said Tula.
She lost her husband, Prafulla, several years ago and resorted to menial jobs to eke out a living. But when she fell ill and was in no condition to work, she started begging in front of Jagannath temple. She does not have a family and lives near the temple.
Haris Chandra Maharana, secretary of temple managing committee, Phulbani, said the money was used for renovation of the old temple complex.
