Patna: Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday flagged off 40 special teams for the repair and maintenance of street lights in various wards across the city in view of the coming festival season. These teams will visit each ward daily to ensure all street lights are operational.
“Every team has been tasked to take care of two wards each and make sure that all the street lights in their respective wards are functional.The team will repair the damaged and non-functional lights before the beginning of the festival season,” a PMC press communiqué read. Each team comprises an electrician and a supervisor, along with a special vehicle equipped with lights, electronic gadgets, other technical necessities, and a ladder.
The teams are directed to start their work at 9am, inspecting and repairing street lights in their allotted wards each day. “Separate personnel have been deputed to handle the complaints of the common people and to look after the grievances concerning the street lights on the main roads,” the PMC said. “Residents are encouraged to register their complaints related to street lights on helpline number 155304 for quick resolution,” it added.
Mayor Sita Sahu and PMC commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar, who were present at the flag-off event, instructed the team members to work properly and resolve street light issues in the city.
Meanwhile, the PMC is also conducting fogging and anti-larvae spraying in various wards to check the spread of dengue and other monsoon-related diseases. However, some locals expressed concern over the “occasional” campaigns by the PMC to address citizens’ grievances. “Why do PMC people have to wait for a festive season to repair non-functional street lights? Why can’t they do it regularly?” questioned a group of irritated residents, including women and the elderly, from Kankarbagh.
They also criticized the helpline process for repairs, describing it as tedious. “After getting the complaint registered, which is already an onerous task, they take more than a fortnight and sometimes even a month to do the job,” said Sushila Devi of Kankarbagh locality.
