MMRDA approves transfer of 2,000 sqm Dharavi plot | Mumbai News – Times of India
Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the transfer of a 2,000sqm plot (half an acre) in Sector 5 of Dharavi for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP).
The plot, located near the BEST bus depot in Dharavi Sector 5, is owned by MMRDA. The land transfer, requested by DRP in May, aligns with the state government’s resolution mandating the transfer of government land in the Dharavi notified area to the appointed contractor. In compliance with this resolution, MMRDA will transfer the land to Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), following the authority’s recent meeting approval.
The DRP aims to redevelop 600 acres within the Dharavi notified area, transforming it comprehensively under this initiative. A govt resolution issued on Nov 5, 2018, outlined the joint development through a special purpose vehicle and granted special rights to facilitate redevelopment and all the land owned by any government agency in Dharavi Notified area will have to handed to DRP.
The compensation for this land will be 25% of the ready reckoner value, payable to the relevant government agency.
DRPPL plans to develop a modern bus depot for BEST on this land, in exchange for 12 acres from BEST undertaking, which includes two prominent bus depots in Sion East — Dharavi and Kalakilla. These depots, with a combined parking capacity for about 300 buses, also house BEST transport division offices, power supply division offices, etc
DRPPL is also seeking land outside the Dharavi slum area to support this project. The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) transferred 27.57 acres, including the Mahim station scrapyard, to DRPPL on March 13, 2024. This land is vital for the 600-acre project, home to nearly 12 lakh residents.
