Bhubaneswar: The Bomikhal Road overbridge and Raj Mahal flyover in the city have recently seen an upgrade in their lighting system with the move aimed at providing better visibility for those travelling at night, enhancing safety and convenience on these key routes.
This improvement has been appreciated by both commuters and road safety experts. They said the installation of the lights in a spiral pattern along the streetlight poles of both bridges has been a strategic move.
Experts said these lights serve a dual purpose. First, they provide extra illumination, which was much needed according to the regular commuters. Second, they act as road markers, clearly indicating the edges of the bridges to the drivers, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.
“The existing streetlights were insufficient for safe travel at night. With the new lights in place, commuting has become really easier. We feel comfortable and secure while moving on these bridges now,” Bomikhal resident Ritesh Nayak said.
Road safety experts have endorsed the initiative, highlighting its significance in preventing mishaps and promoting safe travel conditions. “The enhanced lighting on the bridges can be seen as a step forward in addressing road safety concerns,” road safety expert Syed Maqbool Ali said.
Ali, a former member of National Road Safety Council, said the importance of adequate lighting on the roadways cannot be overstated, especially in urban areas with heavy traffic. Poor lighting conditions can lead to reduced visibility, which is a major factor behind road accidents, he said.
Urban planners of the city said the upgrade is expected to have a positive impact on the flow of traffic. “Better visibility translates to smoother traffic movement, as drivers are more confident and can make safer decisions when road conditions are clearly visible,” urban planner Piyush Rout said.
He said such measures are vital for enhancing road safety and ensuring that night travel is not a perilous endeavour. The authorities should continue with such improvements, keeping in mind the welfare of the commuters and overall enhancement of the city’s infrastructure, Rout said.
