Police use force to disperse agitating guest teachers | Patna News – Times of India
Patna: Police on Monday used batons to disperse guest teachers who were protesting against the termination of their services by the state govt. The protesters, who wanted to meet CM Nitish Kumar, were stopped by the police near Patna zoo when they attempted to enter the restricted area. The police resorted to mild force when the agitators tried to forcefully move towards the CM’s residence.
The education department had discontinued the services of these senior secondary school teachers on April 1, stating that the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) had recruited an adequate number of teachers for the senior secondary schools, making it unnecessary to retain the guest teachers.
Approximately 500 guest teachers from various districts gathered near gate number 1 of Patna zoo around 8am, and the lathi-charge occurred around 1pm. Girish Kumar Singh, a former teacher from Motihari, said 15-20 guest teachers were injured, with two sustaining severe injuries. They were treated at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in Shastri Nagar before being sent home.
“There are 4,257 guest teachers in the state. We were recruited in 2018, but our services were discontinued from April 1, 2024. We served at the +2 schools for almost six years. Now, our service has been terminated. We were going to meet the CM regarding this, but on the way, the police started beating us without any reason,” Singh added.
Pankaj Kumar Suman, another guest teacher, said the police had also used batons on guest teachers in front of the CM’s residence on April 1 when they had come to protest for their demands. The police initially tried to stop the agitators but resorted to baton-charging and dispersing them when they did not comply, resulting in several teachers being injured.
Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, criticised the govt on the issue. “There is no place for oppressive actions in a democracy,” she posted on X. She condemned the baton charge on guest teachers who were peacefully protesting for their demands.
