Chennai: With elections approaching, MLAs are actively pushing for early completion of projects under implementation in their constituencies utilising their constituency development funds and the ‘Ungal Thoguthiyil Muthalamaichar’ (Chief minister in your constituency) scheme. Each MLA is allotted 3 crore annually under the constituency development scheme for initiatives such as smart classrooms, multipurpose halls, and PDS outlets.MLAs across parties are urging administrators to expedite especially road repairs. The legislators also forward petitions from the public to the officials, requesting road relaying work and stormwater drains. After completing a slew of projects, DMK MLA (Egmore) I Paranthamen is monitoring the construction of an urban primary health centre and multipurpose halls at Chetpet and Purasawalkam. “I told the officials to complete all the ongoing work by this year-end,” he said. He is pushing for the rehabilitation of 750 families in Thideer Nagar, Bricklin Road through the TN Urban Habitat Development Board scheme, utilising 68 grounds secured from Greater Chennai Corporation.In Perundurai, AIADMK MLA S Jayakumar is trying hard to get CCTV surveillance cameras in three locations within the Uthukuli union of Tirupur. “People need better security after an increase in murders and other crimes in the region. The work was not taken up despite my recommendation,” the MLA said.Several elected representatives have voiced their disappointment regarding lack of govt orders to absorb the 18% GST charges on the constituency development fund despite govt assurances during a recent assembly session. AIADMK (Singanallur) MLA K R Jayaram expressed concern that the constituency development fund is inadequate due to GST charges that reduce the available money to just 54 lakh. He has requested the govt for a special fund to repair roads in his constituency. “Only two of the eight projects chosen for Ungal Thoguthiyil Muthalamaichar have been completed here,” he said. CPM MLA (Kilvelur) Nagai Maali was excited about the pooja ceremony on Tuesday for the construction of smart classrooms, a bus shelter, and a part-time PDS outlet in Kilvelur panchayat union. “I have asked officials to speed up the projects and ensure its inauguration this year,” the MLA said.
