Tiger Scare: Tiger scare grips Ganjam, Kandhamal villagers | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Panic spread among villagers in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts after they found the pug marks of a suspected Royal Bengal Tiger (RBT) in Rama Krushna Nagar near Bhanjanagar on Monday.
The villagers have informed forest officials about their discovery and believe that the big cat migrated from Maharashtra, and was roaming in the bordering Andhra Pradesh killing cattle.“Forest officials rushed to the spot and collected the pug marks of the animal. The pug marks are being analysed to ascertain the exact animal moving in the area,” said Himansu Sekhar Mohanty, divisional forest officer (DFO) at Ghumusar North division.
According to sources, the yet-to-be-identified predator has already killed at least 14 cattle in Muzagarh and Central ranges over the last four months.
A forest officer said the owners of the cattle killed have been compensated as per the guidelines of the state govt. Over Rs 2.86 lakh have been provided as compensation to them in the last four months, sources said.
To identify the animal, forest officials have installed 15 camera traps in the area. Steps have also been taken to install ten more camera traps. At least four teams have been formed, involving 20 personnel, to track the movement of the animal in the area. “We are constantly monitoring the animal’s movement,” he added.
Another team of officials is spreading awareness among villagers not to venture into the forest area nor leave their cattle alone for grazing. They have also told villagers to keep their cattle in an outdoor shed at night.
In March, a predator killed three cows in Buduli village in Muzagarh range. Despite installing camera traps, the animals responsible for the attacks has not been identified.
