Jackfruit Chips: Kandhamal Jackfruit Chips to be Supplied to Tamil Nadu | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: Jackfruit chips, prepared by tribal women self-help groups (SHGs) in Kandhamal district, which have gained popularity across the state and outside in the past one year, will now be supplied to Tamil Nadu after a company there placed an order for four quintals of the product.
Kandhamal collector Ashish Ishwar Patil said the chips will be supplied in bulk quantities to markets in other states under the brand name ‘Kandhamal Jackfruit Chips’ with attractive packaging. The order given by the Tamil Nadu company will be dispatched on Thursday, he added.
Debjani Bhuyan, project administrator of Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Phulbani, said tribal SHG members are currently engaged in preparing the chips for the Tamil Nadu order. Discussions are also underway to supply the product to other states.
P Murali Mohan, project manager of ITDA Phulbani, said over from 15 villages in three blocks — Phulbani, Phiringia and Khajuripada — are involved in the production of jackfruit chips after receiving training. The chips are being sold at Rs 220-250 per kg in the market.
Prior to the establishment of a jackfruit processing unit at Panga Uppar Sahi in Phiringia block and a centre of excellence at Phulbani last year, jackfruits growing in Kandhamal often went to waste. Now, several tribal women are engaged in earning livelihood by preparing value-added products from jackfruit.
Swarnakanti Kanhar, president of an SHG near Phulbani, said an expert from Karnataka had visited to provide training on preparing various products from jackfruit. Although they have learned to make several items, the focus is currently on jackfruit chips due to their high demand during monsoon.
The women collect jackfruits from nearby forests and also purchase them from farmers at Rs 10-12 per piece, depending on their size and quality. After extracting and drying the bulbs, they fry them to make the chips. A single jackfruit can yield from 250 grams to 1 kg of chips.
