DGP orders review of gun licences across state | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Director general of police Jitender on Friday directed all commissioners and superintendents of police in Telangana to review the issuance and status of arms licences within their respective jurisdictions.According to official data, 7,125 gun licences have been issued statewide, covering the use of 9,294 firearms. Of these, 510 licences were granted in the past three years alone. The DGP instructed officials to specifically review the licences of individuals who have come under adverse notice. “CPs and SPs must issue notices to such licensees, citing reasons in accordance with due procedure. If the reasons provided by the licensees are found to be valid, their licences may be renewed,” the DGP’s office said.He further directed police units to review the status of licence holders who no longer reside in Telangana. “Such individuals must re-register under the appropriate police jurisdiction. Notices should be sent to the last known addresses provided by the licensees if their current whereabouts are unknown,” he added. The DGP emphasised that all arms licences must be granted and renewed in compliance with the Arms (Amendment) Act, 2019. At the time of renewal, police are to verify the legitimacy of the applicant’s need for a weapon.
