Infant dies of suffocation after drunk father sleeps on top of her | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: In a tragic incident in Khanapur town of Nirmal district, a 28-day-old baby girl died of suffocation in the early hours of Tuesday after her intoxicated father allegedly lay down on top of her while she was asleep beside her mother. The incident occurred between 5 am and 6 am at Subash Nagar. According to the Khanapur police, the accused, Alakunta Shekar, 22, a labourer from Cheemanapally village in Nirmal, arrived at his in-laws’ residence in an inebriated state.Shekar’s wife, Sujatha, had given birth to their third child 28 days ago and was staying at her maternal home. Despite knowing that his wife and newborn daughter were asleep on the bed, Shekar reportedly lay down carelessly beside them, leading to the infant’s death due to suffocation. The baby’s grandmother, Allepu Rajamani, 45, filed a complaint at the Khanapur police station on Tuesday afternoon. She alleged that Shekar had previously quarrelled with the family, insisting on taking his wife home immediately after the birth of the child.“On May 19 night, Shekar came to our house, knocked, and kicked the door multiple times, demanding to take his wife home. We didn’t allow him in. Around 5 am Tuesday, my son stepped out to relieve himself and accidentally left the door open. Shekar sneaked in and lay down on the bed, unknowingly on top of the baby, who was covered with a bedsheet. My daughter woke up and screamed when she realised what had happened. We turned on the light, and when Shekar got up, we saw the baby bleeding from the nose. She was declared dead at a local hospital,” Rajamani recounted.Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Shekar under section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the BNS. Nirmal district superintendent of police Janaki Sharmila confirmed that Shekar was arrested on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody.
