Woman dies in SUV accident, driver booked for rash driving in Bengaluru | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: A 22-year-old woman died after an SUV met with an accident on lower Agaram Road, central Bengaluru, in the early hours of Wednesday, while her friend, who was driving the vehicle, sustained injuries.The deceased has been identified as Sarah Catherine, a resident of Viveknagar. The injured, Preetham Christine (24), also from the same locality, is undergoing treatment.According to police, the incident took place around 1.45am when the duo was returning home from a party in a Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Preliminary investigations revealed that Preetham, who was driving the SUV, was allegedly intoxicated and driving at high speed.While approaching the ASC Centre south gate from India Garage junction, Preetham reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The SUV first struck a lamp post on the pavement, then hit the road divider and collided with another post before coming to a halt. The impact left the front portion of the vehicle heavily damaged.Sarah, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered severe head injuries. Both were rushed to a private hospital by autorickshaw drivers who witnessed the crash. The doctors declared Sarah dead on arrival.Police said both victims were employed in private firms and were neighbours. A case has been registered against Preetham under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, based on a complaint filed by Sarah’s younger brother Alan Benjamin.An alcometer test confirmed that Preetham was under the influence of alcohol beyond permissible limits. His blood samples have been sent to the forensic science laboratory, police said.Preetham is reported to be out of danger.
