Bengaluru grapples with relentless rain, prompting the IMD to issue a heavy rainfall alert. Tech companies are offering work-from-home options for employees.

BENGALURU: With no let-up from rain fury across Bengaluru on Tuesday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued heavy rainfall alert for Bengaluru on Wednesday. Close on the heels of IMD’s alert, several tech companies and MNCs declared work-from-home option for their staffers citing safety issues during the daily commute to work.Torrential rains continued to batter Bengaluru with city receiving an average of 42.7mm rainfall. However, parts of RR Nagar zone surpassed Sunday’s near-record rainfall by receiving 150mm rainfall on Monday night – the highest in a decade.Despite the highest rainfall, RR Nagar zone hardly faced any incidents of flooding, except for a few low-lying pockets reporting minimal waterlogging. For those wondering what could have helped RR Nagar in averting flooding, both residents and officials of Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) attributed it to better stormwater management in the zone. “Timely desilting of stormwater drains and a well-monitored garbage disposal system avoided flooding of the zone due to the vulnerable Vrishabhavathi Valley that traverses the locality,” a BBMP official explained.Besides, the zone has a robust network of 42 lakes with the V-valley spanning 28km.Meanwhile, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar Tuesday said: “In the future, a law will be introduced to prevent construction of underground facilities near lakes and low-lying areas for vehicle parking. A plan of action will be released after the rain subsides.”
