Cops relocate, old G5 stn turns into anti-social den | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: The erstwhile G5 police station in Kilpauk’s Secretariat Colony, which had been emptied of its occupants in 2020, has fallen prey to the menace of littering — as liquor bottles, furniture, and unused vehicles dot the premises. As the police station began functioning from another location nearby for more than five years, this property has turned troublesome for locals.Located opposite a park-cum-playground, the dilapidated structure poses a risk to children, who venture on to the premises strewn with shards of glass. “Sometimes, it becomes a hub for couples and smokers, while at night, tipplers gather for drinks. This has been the case for a long time,” says Rahul, a resident of the area. During the monsoon, the area is prone to waterlogging, becomes unmotorable and the waste spills onto the road.Autorickshaw driver Dorai, who resides on adjoining Barakah Road, said the building is a pain point. Pointing to the worn out window sills, broken slabs and deep cracks on supporting beams, he says: “The entire structure is on the verge of collapse. It is dangerous during the monsoon. It will crumble one day, and poses risk to property and people.”Though the corporation has placed dustbins right outside the premises for source segregation, much of the waste is dumped around the structure, sometimes right on vehicles, especially on the back side. N Sathyamoorthy, who is incharge of the conservancy work in the area, blames the callous attitude of residents for the waste discards. “Despite several warnings, residents continue to dump waste around the premises. It is difficult for conservancy workers assigned to this region to clean around the premises. Residents also have a collective responsibility to keep their surroundings clean..,” he adds.Jerena Begum, deputy commissioner of police, Kilpauk, said action would be taken to address the issue.
