Bengaluru: A prolonged power outage caused by thundershowers left several parts of Bengaluru without electricity, overwhelming Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) with over 33,000 distress calls from residents.Between 3pm and midnight Sunday, Bescom’s helpline received 33,335 calls from across the city as heavy rain and strong winds led to transformer failures, uprooted electric poles and snapped transmission lines. Bescom officials said 7,749 complaints were officially registered and routed to respective divisions for repair work. The utility said the estimated loss is over Rs 3.5 crore because of damage in electrical infrastructure.The worst-hit areas included parts of Adugodi, where a transformer blast around 3am left Nanjappa Layout in complete darkness. Resident Poornima P, who owns a department store, said the outage caused significant losses. Similar disruptions were reported in northern and northeastern parts of the city, where technical faults in the transmission network caused widespread outages. — Madhuja ChakrabortyBOXOldage home residents strandedOver 60 specially abled and elderly residents of Care Shelter Public Charitable Trust, an oldage home in Hennur, were left stranded after relentless rain flooded their facility at 2am Monday. Among them are mentally and physically challenged people, epileptic patients and paralysed seniors, some with no family members.Regina Mary, caretaker, said, “In the wee hours, a 94-year-old inmate screamed that something cold was hitting his bed. When we rushed to the spot, we saw water nearly 3 feet deep had flooded the room. We had to wake up everyone and ask them to sit straight.” Critical medical equipment, food supplies and two service vehicles were destroyed.
