BENGALURU: As relentless rains continue to lash the city, Bengaluru has once again come to a grinding halt with waterlogged roads, traffic snarls, and inundated homes disrupting daily life. The situation has drawn sharp political attention, with leaders making high-profile visits to flood-hit areas while citizens voice their growing frustration.In a dramatic move, a local BJP MLA visited Sai Layout — one of the worst-hit areas — riding an earthmoving JCB machine.The downpour over the past 24 hours led to severe flooding across several low-lying areas. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar expressed concern over the damage and inconvenience caused to residents. “I am deeply concerned by the havoc caused by relentless rains in Bengaluru… I remain committed to working round the clock to address challenges and ensure relief,” he tweeted.However, opposition leaders were quick to question the government’s preparedness. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticised the deputy CM’s handling of the crisis, pointing to long-standing civic issues. “I appreciate your honesty in admitting decades of neglect of civic infrastructure that has led Bengaluru to where it is today,” Surya posted on social media. “At least now, will you forego your tunnel road fantasy and concentrate on the basics?”The MP also took aim at the pace of development under Shivakumar’s leadership, stating, “It’s been over two years since you assumed charge, sir. We wish to see real, fast-paced progress, not excuses.”In response, Shivakumar reiterated his commitment to long-term solutions. “I will be visiting the BBMP War Room and flood-affected areas personally to take stock on the ground,” he wrote on Twitter.Sunday night’s downpour left many residents stranded, with rescue operations underway in several areas. Boats were deployed in the worst-hit pockets, while Karnataka Police assisted in evacuating residents from submerged homes.Residents are growing increasingly frustrated over the repeated flooding caused by poor drainage and unplanned urban development. “It’s been raining since 3 a.m. My house and office are flooded. Daily life is suffering. The government must act fast,” said Bengaluru resident Mohamed Jaullah.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and multiple districts in Karnataka, warning of continued rainfall over the next two days.
