Bengaluru: The manager of a hotel in Bhuvanappa Layout, where abusive content about Kannadigas was allegedly displayed on the digital display board, has been remanded in judicial custody. Madiwala police arrested Sarfaraz following a viral social media video showing offensive scrolling text targeting the Kannada-speaking community. He was produced before a magistrate at National Village Games residence in Koramangala Sunday morning before being transferred to Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara.Authorities have contacted the owner of the hotel GS Suites, identified as Jamshad, who is currently in Kerala, and asked him to appear for questioning. Police only shared the first names of both people.Police registered a suo motu case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 196(1)(a), which addresses promoting enmity between different groups on grounds including language.Police swung into action after the footage was shared on X. Officers acted without waiting for formal complaints.Sarfaraz claimed that the display board was hacked. According to police, the hotel had procured the digital board from a vendor on Hosur Road who had provided a common, easily accessible password to approximately 60 customers.The vendor suggested the password could be accessed by anyone downloading a specific LED display board application. He reported receiving a complaint about offensive content from the hotel management on May 8 and discovered the password had been changed. Despite the vendor’s recommendation to remove the display board, the hotel management continued using it. On May 11, when an employee activated the displays while turning on other devices, the offensive content appeared again.Police are investigating to determine whether the incident resulted from hacking or internal misconduct.
