Mango market moves on in Bengaluru, but traders wait for better sales | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: For years, the mango market near TV Tower in JC Nagar was a summer ritual: Dozens of colourful stalls, the sweet scent of ripe fruit in the air and crowds of loyal buyers haggling for their favourite varieties. But this season, the buzz is a little quieter.Reason: The market has packed up and shifted 1.4km down the road towards Mehkri Circle, a move taken to avoid traffic bottlenecks at the entrance of the amusement park and RT Nagar Main Road intersection. In fact, the new location has a roadside parking facility for mango lovers. However, instead of better business, vendors are finding it difficult to make a sale as, they say, not many people are aware of the new market location and motorists heading towards RT Nagar Main Road have stopped coming to them as they are forced to take a detour. “Last year, we had constant footfall. Now, people can’t spot us from the road,” said Vinesh Kumar, who has been selling mangoes at the market for the last 20 years, sourcing it from Channapatna, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. To sweeten the deal, some sellers are slashing prices. Priya Deepa, a young vendor, said: “Customers have decreased this month and hence, I’m willing to cut the prices.” Some sellers have decided to operate till midnight, hoping to draw customers, who dread venturing out during the day in the city’s bumper-to-bumper traffic. Some sellers like Ilayaraja B, who bring in mangoes from across the country, are banking on their regular customers.Vendors hope the news about their new location spreads quickly and their business, starting this fortnight, increases.Nidhi S, a homemaker who was buying mangoes, said: “I have shopped by here every summer for five years. Earlier, it was jam-packed and noisy. Now, it’s peaceful and I can take my time picking out mangoes that I want.” Another customer, Anulekha Mary John, added: “Parking was a nightmare before. Now, it is easy.”— Sutapa Dey, Madhuja Chakraborty & Sathvi G Bhat
