Hyderabad: Alert immigration officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) prevented two Indians from falling victim to an international cybercrimehuman trafficking racket operating out of Cambodia. The victims — Nabeel Ahmed (30) from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh, and Ahmed (25) from Dehradun — were lured by promises of lucrative data entry jobs in Cambodia. The fraud was orchestrated through WhatsApp conversations and Zoom calls by the accused, operating under the names — Jason alias Hasan, who used a UAE SIM card; Tank, a Chinese national using a Turkish SIM card; and Sahil alias Md Azeem, suspected to be from Hyderabad.According to police, the accused first contacted Nabeel — who had previously worked as a cab driver in Delhi and a labourer in the Middle East — through WhatsApp with a job offer in Cambodia. A fake job interview was held on Zoom, and both Nabeel and Ahmed were issued tourist visas and flight tickets to travel to Cambodia via Bangkok from Delhi. “We were told that the job site was close to the airport in Phnom Penh, and that free accommodation would be provided along with food,” Nabeel said. However, due to a strict security check at IGI Airport under ‘Operation Sindoor’, Nabeel and Ahmed could not board the flight on April 24. They were immediately provided flight tickets for the following day, but still could not board a flight as one of the security personnel became suspicious of their nervous behaviour and asked them to show proof of funds, as they were travelling on tourist visas. After the failed attempts to depart from Delhi airport, the accused arranged for their travel from Hyderabad via Singapore to Cambodia. On May 15, Nabeel and Ahmed arrived at the RGI Airport to go to Cambodia via Singapore. “After checking our tickets and tourist visas, immigration desk staff directed us to their supervisor. We were explained how Indians are being trafficked to work in Chinese-operated call centres in Cambodia under threats and torture to commit cybercrimes. We realised the fraud and decided to lodge a police complaint,” Nabeel said. Based on his complaint, TGCSB registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS and the IT Act against the accused on Friday, and police are trying to locate the local offenders involved.
