Son & friend kill ice cream maker in Bengaluru, try to hush it up

Bengaluru: The mysterious death of an ice cream manufacturer took an interesting turn with police arresting his son and a friend on murder charges. Nagesh, 55, owner of Apollo Ice Creams in Kunigal, Tumakuru district, was found dead inside the factory on May 11.His elder son, N Surya, 20, told police his father was electrocuted. There were two large electric wires near Nagesh’s body, and a burnt mark on his right arm strengthened the electrocution theory. Registering an unnatural death report (UDR) case, Kunigal police sent the body for postmortem. Surya returned home to prepare for the funeral and other post-death formalities.Police visited the factory on May 13 and collected CCTV images. To their shock, the footage revealed a different story — Surya and his friend Dhanush were seen strangling Nagesh; Surya used a white towel to kill his father while Dhanush held Nagesh’s legs. Later, they laid the body and passed electric shocks through the wires, police said. On Wednesday, the postmortem report that reached cops confirmed the reason of death — The victim was strangled.CCTV footage showed Surya and Dhanush walking into the factory at 10pm on May 11. A little later, Nagesh was seen shouting at Surya angrily. Nagesh attempted to hit Surya and a little later, Surya threw the white towel on Nagesh’s neck. Nagesh fell and Dhanush held his legs.Police said Nagesh’s wife spurned him 15 years ago and lived in their farmhouse on the outskirts of Kunigal. Nagesh stayed with Surya and daughter Savita in Kunigal. Tumakuru SP Ashok KV confirmed Surya and Danush’s arrests. “The motive is yet to be established. We’re probing all angles. The prime suspect confessed to making two futile attempts to kill his father in the past — one through a road accident and another by giving supari to killers,” he said.Quoting Surya, police said in mid-April during Nagesh’s visit to Huliyurdurga for a festival, Surya arranged a few men to ram a jeep into Nagesh’s car. “A fight broke out; the men were waiting for an opportunity to assault Nagesh and kill him. But villagers arrived there forced the men to pay Rs 23,000 to Nagesh for damages,” police said.Surya then contacted supari killers, paid them Rs 3 lakh to eliminate his father, police said. Initially, the gang agreed to the deal, but demanded more later saying they needed money to handle legal matters if they were caught. “Unable to arrange more money, Surya asked them to wait for some time,” police said.
