Flyover near T Nagar set to open by end of May

Chennai: The much-awaited link from Madley Junction to the CIT Nagar–Usman Road flyover is set to open by the end of May, bringing major relief to commuters from Ashok Nagar, KK Nagar, and Saidapet heading to Panagal Park and T Nagar. With final works nearly complete, the flyover will soon become operational, according to Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner J Kumaragurubaran. The project includes a single-lane entry ramp located 50m from Madley Junction, enabling cars, bikes, and buses to directly access the 1.1-km two-lane flyover. A down-ramp near the T Nagar bus terminus is also nearing completion and will help vehicles exit smoothly onto the road below. Exits have been planned near Ranganathan Street for shoppers, while an additional entry ramp will soon be built to allow access from the opposite side toward Anna Salai. A connecting stretch between the new and existing CIT Nagar–Usman Road flyovers is also under construction, though not as a direct elevated link. Vehicles will descend to ground level and merge with the older flyover through a short corridor, officials from the bridges department said. This flyover is expected to ease congestion caused by vehicles and MTC buses entering and exiting the T Nagar bus terminus a longstanding choke point. With ongoing underground sewage work blocking one route to the bus stop, local residents such as T Arjun Kumar say the new flyover is a timely solution. “GCC should turn its attention to renovating Duraisamy subway, which is plagued by water leakage and broken road surfaces that endanger motorists,” he said.
