4 held for violent protests against railway project near Rourkela | Bhubaneswar News

Rourkela: Four people, including two women local body representatives and an adovcate, were arrested late Wednesday in connection with last month’s violent protest against a railway line construction near Rourkela.The incident, which occurred on April 19, left several officials injured. Among those arrested aretribal activist Deme Oram(51), Bondamunda panchayat Sarpanch Anita Tirkery (33), Kapatmunda panchayat samiti member Susma Oram (35) and advocate Shubajit Banerjee (30). The arrests follow an FIR lodged by Bisra additional tehsildar Purushottam Nayak, who suffered serious injuries during the clash. The protest turned violent after a protester, Eto Ekka (37), was killed by an earthmover at the construction site. Protesters hurled stones and used bows and arrows to attack police and officials.Three Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) officials, three revenue staff, and 16 police personnel were injured. Protesters also vandalised vehicles and looted a police drone. “We have arrested four persons in this case and further investigation is ongoing. Others found involved in the incident will also be arrested,” said DSP Amarendra Sandh, Zone-II, Rourkela. The 8-km railway line, part of a Rs 132 crore project by RSP, has faced strong opposition from tribal residents demanding the return of unused land. The accused face charges including conspiracy, rioting, assault, dacoity and attempt to murder.
