Now, Shivakumar pushes for dedicated flyover from Hebbal to KIA

Bengaluru: Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, in a memorandum to Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, proposed yet another infrastructure project: A dedicated flyover connecting Hebbal Junction and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). This will be the third project between the two points. A dedicated Metro line to the airport is under construction while a tollway to KIA already exists. In his meeting with Gadkari in Delhi, Shivakumar justified the flyover citing rapid urbanisation and growth of several industrial and commercial hubs around the airport, besides a sharp increase in passenger footfalls at KIA over the past few years. He said this has led to higher traffic volumes on the stretch.“The current road infrastructure — though partially elevated — consists of multiple disconnected flyovers, traffic signals, and pedestrian crossings, all of which contribute to severe congestion, travel delays, and inconvenience for commuters. This seamless flyover corridor project would greatly benefit not just North Bengaluru, but the broader region and the nation at large,” he stated in the requisition. The dedicated flyover would help reduce travel time between Hebbal and the airport, decongest the main carriageway, ensure smoother and faster access to KIA for both passengers and cargo, and improve road safety and enhance overall commuting experience. Shivakumar requested Gadkari to consider the proposal and initiate necessary steps to plan and construct the flyover. He also requested Gadkari’s intervention to provide compensation to farmers whose land was acquired for the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project. He told the Union minister that the STRR project was initiated in 2019, and the prolonged delay in releasing compensation hindered its progress and left many farmers in a state of uncertainty. He requested the expedition of the release of compensation funds to ensure smooth implementation of the project and timely delivery of its benefits to the public.Besides this, he also requested Gadkari to take necessary steps to complete pending road work from Ravishankar Ashram to Kagalipura toll booth on NH 209. Additionally, he urged upgradation of NH 209 (from Bengaluru to Kanakapura) to a six-lane highway with service roads from the existing four-lane.
