Kilpauk park locked and in ruins

Chennai: A public park maintained by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on EVR Road in Kilpauk (Ward 100) is abandoned and locked for more than a year.
Once a lung space with trees and greenery, the park is now a dumping ground for construction and demolition (C&D) waste and a hotspot for illegal activities at night.

Residents say the park, which was developed after Cyclone Vardah, was neglected ever since the Covid-19 lockdown. The trees inside the park were cut down by private contractors, and no steps were taken to restore the green cover. Instead, the premises became a site for dumping construction debris from nearby areas such as Kellys and Kilpauk Garden Road. T Sathish Kumar of Kilpauk, said, “the park turned a mess since lockdown. All the debris is dumped here at night. If restored, the park would be an ideal place for older people and children to play.”
M Robert, a resident-activist of Landon’s Road, said, “We have complained numerous times to the councillor, and every time the response from them has been that we are yet to get sanctions from the corporation to clear the debris. Even recently, news was published saying that the C&D waste will be collected and disposed of in the city. What about the legacy waste? The debris stocked up in the park has been there for more than two years. Necessary actions should be taken to remove this waste.”
Councillor of Ward 100, Vasanthi Paramasivam, said, “measures will be taken at the earliest to restore the park by removing the C&D waste. Playing equipment and amenities such as washrooms and drinking water will also be installed soon in the park.”
