Mumbai: After 50 years, the state cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to increase the daily wage of those in beggars’ homes across the state from Rs 5 to Rs 40. The wage is provided for the work done by individuals in rehabilitation centres established to reduce begging.
A press release issued by the govt said that since 1964, a monthly wage of five rupees was provided as per the Maharashtra Prevention of Begging Act. The Act was enacted to curb the tendency to beg. Under this Act, 14 rehabilitation homes are operating in the state, accommodating 4,127 individuals.
