Uttam warns against assault on liberal values at Bharat Summit

Hyderabad: Irrigation and civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday said liberal values were facing an unprecedented assault and that freedom of thought, speech, arts, academia, assembly, and protest were under relentless attack by extreme right-wing and authoritarian regimes globally.
Speaking on the concluding day of Bharat Summit 2025 at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), he called for a determined and united fight against all forms of injustice, warning that complacency would only embolden those who seek to divide and dominate.
Acknowledging the gloom that often permeates discussions on current global affairs, Uttam said many people feel disheartened and even hopeless when confronted with rising intolerance and authoritarianism. However, the Bharat Summit rekindled hope by uniting not just minds but also hearts, he said.
The minister invited delegates to consider Hyderabad as a global investment destination, pointing out that the city offered some of the best opportunities across various sectors. “Telangana stands ready to partner with global investors while maintaining its commitment to social justice and inclusive development,” he added.
Reflecting on the breadth of discussions held over two days, Uttam said the summit’s sessions addressed critical themes such as global justice, environmental concerns, the spread of misinformation through technology, and the persistent challenges of gender and age discrimination. Over 450 delegates participated, with 100 delegates representing over 100 countries, collectively contributing ideas aimed at strengthening progressive ideals and resisting ideologies of hatred, division, and oppression.
Deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka said the summit was not just a platform to present the initiatives undertaken by the Congress govt in the state, but also a valuable opportunity to learn many new things. “I am confident that this event will become a regular annual feature,” he said.
