Olectra enters glass fiber reinforced polymer rebar manufacturing for construction sector | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) group’s listed entity, Olectra Greentech, diversified into the manufacturing of glass fibre reinforced polymer rebar (GFRP Rebar) as an alternative to steel reinforcement bar (rebar) for the construction sector.
Olectra Greentech, which makes electric buses and insulators, developed the rebar using ECR (e-glass corrosion resistant) glass and epoxy resin. According to the company, the GFRP rebar is four times lighter than conventional steel rebar but is twice as strong, with a tensile strength of 950–1100 MPa. It has applications in harsh and demanding environments.

“It is also non-corrosive, non-magnetic, non-conductive, and water-resistant. It is also easier to handle and transport,” said the Hyderabad-based company, adding that India consumed nearly 50 million tonnes of TMT steel rebar.
“The steel rebar substitute marks Olectra’s official entry into the construction materials industry, with applications from industrial flooring to pavements, bridge decks, precast elements, substation civil structures, and drainage facilities. Its eco-friendly and non-corrosive properties make it an ideal alternative to steel rebar, especially for marine products,” Olectra chairman & managing director KV Pradeep said.
