Tutor, 6 aides held for kidnapping minor boy in city | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested a tutor and six associates for allegedly kidnapping his 10-year-old student while the boy was returning from school at Panchagaon in Airfield area here on Tuesday. The boy was rescued from Nirakarpur area in Khurda district about six hours after he was kidnapped.
The accused have been identified as tutor Subhrakant Mohapatra (22), Somnath Das (21), his wife, Nibedita (22), Chinmay Kumar Nayak (22), his wife, Sujata (19), Sandip Routray (22) and Sagar Nayak (21).
“The kidnapping was executed for financial gain (ransom). Mohapatra, who resided near the victim’s house, knew there was substantial cash at the boy’s residence following a property transaction by his family. Mohapatra shared the information with his associates and devised the kidnapping,” commissioner of police S Dev Datta Singh said.
At about 10.10 am, as the Class V student walked home from his village school, Mohapatra intercepted him and led him to a vehicle where the other perpetrators waited. He deceived the child by claiming they were heading to a doctor’s clinic for treatment of his leg injury.
Subsequently, the boy’s mother received a call from a stranger, who informed her that her son had been kidnapped and demanded ransom for his release. The caller did not specify the ransom amount. He asked the woman to wait for his second call after 30 minutes. But he never called back. The woman was warned against contacting police.
“During this period, mastermind Mohapatra visited the child’s house and claimed he had witnessed unidentified armed individuals abducting the boy. Since it is a very sensitive case, we acted promptly taking all precautions for the safety of the hostage,” DCP Jagmohan Meena said.
Police traced the caller’s phone signal to a slum at Nirakarpur in Khurda district. Both women involved were aware and supported their spouses in the crime. Some perpetrators had fled to Khallikote in Ganjam district.
“We arrested all suspects within six hours and rescued the boy safely. The child remained composed during captivity, avoiding actions that could have endangered him,” DCP Meena said.
