Kendrapada: A district court in Jagatsinghpur sentenced a 37-year-old man to life imprisonment on Monday for murdering his pregnant wife in 2020 over dowry demand.
District and sessions judge Srinibash Pratihari found Prakash Nathsharma of Bartilo village guilty under sections 302 (murder) and 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives) of the IPC, and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Prakash, with an additional three-month imprisonment if he fails to pay.
Public prosecutor Nalinikanta Moharana said Prakash attacked his 27-year-old wife, Jhuna Nath, with an axe on June 15, 2020. The victim, who was then four months’ pregnant, was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack by her parents but succumbed to her injuries five days later. The couple got married in 2018.
Investigation revealed that Jhuna had been subjected to repeated torture over dowry demands. Police arrested Prakash following a thorough investigation, and the prosecution’s case was strengthened by testimonies from 20 witnesses.
