Kuwait Fire Victims: Kuwait fire victims’ kin wait for bodies | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur/Cuttack: Sixty-year-old Sajani has been crying inconsolably since she was told that her son, Santosh Kumar Gouda, died in the fire in Kuwait.
Santosh (35) used to call his family every day. On Wednesday, when he did not call, Sajani was alarmed. The day after, the family came to know about his death. “Whenever he called, he used to ask me to take care of his father. He visited us in March and promised to come during Dussehra,” Sajani said.
Santosh from Ganjam district’s Ranajhai village under Purushottampur block, was among the 45 Indians who died in the fire that broke out in a multi-storeyed building in Kuwait’s Mangaf on Wednesday. “After seeing the news, we tried to contact him. His telephone was ringing but there was no response. On Thursday, the Indian embassy in Kuwait confirmed his death,” said Anil Gouda, his younger brother.
Santosh has been working in a shopping mall in Kuwait since two years to support his family which includes his parents, wife, his brother, and two sons, aged 7 and 11. “We are now worried about our livelihood,” said Bipra, Santosh’s father.
Another Odia worker, Mohammad Jahur of Karadapalli in Cuttack district, also died in the fire. A day before he died, Jahur told his wife, Rahena Begum (28), that he would return home by September to be with her for her delivery. Jahur (33) from Karadapali village near Tigiria in Cuttack district was working as a laboratory technician in a private company in Kuwait. “His wife is seven months pregnant,” said Mohammad Tayub, Jahur’s elder brother. Jahur, who has been working in Kuwait since 2017, came home in May. “Jahur’s friend confirmed that Jahur’s body was recovered from the building’s ground floor. He was the only breadwinner of the family,” said Tayub.
On Friday, the bodies had been brought to Delhi and were expected to arrive in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, sources said. Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased. Earlier, PM Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families.
