Rising demand for specialised degree courses in Bengaluru colleges | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: A week after the II PU-1 results were announced, admissions have picked up in degree colleges across the state. Most colleges continue to see demand for BCom and BCA programmes, especially those with specialisations.
Kristu Jayanti College, which has received 35,142 applications so far, said computer science applications are the most in demand. “BCA with cyber security, internet of things… anything with specialisations or certifications are the ones in demand. Instead of general BCom, the maximum application is for BCom with Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), BCom with CMA, BCom analytics, BCom retail banking, etc.,” said Fr Augustine George, principal. He added that the application numbers are only set to rise as only II PU exams were announced so far and will soon rise after other boards release theirs.
Suma Singh, registrar (academics, Mount Carmel College) agreed: “Specialised programmes are more in demand due to fast-changing nature of the economy and job opportunities. BCom specialised programme is the most in demand. We have added two new programmes in commerce with specialisations in fintech & digital banking, and business analytics this year. Because of demand for BBA, two rounds of entrance and interviews to shortlist students are completed. We will be having another round soon. BBA healthcare management and BBA fintech and digital finance are the new programmes in management studies.”
Christ deemed-to-be-university, which has already received over a lakh applications, said the most demand has been for science and technology courses like BCA and BSc (Biotechnology), BBA, BCom, BBA LLB (Honours), and BA (Psychology) apart from BTech. “There is no significant increase in the cut-off for most programmes. However, we could see an increase in cut-off for BTech (data science), Master of Computer Applications, BTech (AI ML), BCom, BBA LLB (Honours), BA LLB (Honours),” said the university.
Apart from commerce, psychology also continued to be a popular choice. Jyoti Nivas College and NMKRV College for women also presented similar trends. The colleges said commerce continues to be the most in demand, and science courses will pick up after the results of the Common Entrance Test (CET) are announced.
“The trend remains the same as last year. BCom, BBA, Psychology, BCA are trending. We have around 400 seats for BCom. In the science stream, computer science seats get picked up fast. The other seats will get filled after CET,” said a spokesperson of JNC.
