Hyderabad: Ahead of the Fact-Finding Committee (FFC) inspection by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH), colleges are lining up to hire ‘temporary faculty‘ to meet requirements. These faculty members are being hired solely to present them to the FFC so that the colleges can secure affiliation for the next academic year. They will be dismissed soon after the inspection.
“More than 70% of colleges are on a hiring spree now as they need to meet faculty requirements during the FFC inspections. They are hiring these candidates by paying about 10,000 for a month for two to three months,” said Telangana Schools Technical Colleges Employees Association (TSTCEA) president A Santosh Kumar. He mentioned that many even use ‘fake’ faculty, whose only job is marking attendance in the morning and evening.
According to details available online with the academic audit cell of JNTUH, 104,880 faculty members have been registered in the state. However, faculty at these colleges alleged that not even 50% of the said number are currently working in engineering colleges. “About 40% to 50% of them are being hired just for inspection. A majority of them are from the computer science department,” said D Srinivas Varma, a faculty member working in an engineering college, adding that some colleges have already received an email saying that their college will be inspected on April 16.
The managements, meanwhile, stated that faculty deficiency will be hardly around 20% to 25% in colleges, but not 50% as claimed by the faculty.
“The problem is that JNTUH asks us to show faculty as per sanctioned strength, but not according to the number of seats filled. This is the reason why there will be a deficiency. To cover this, many go for stopgap arrangements,” said Telangana Technical Colleges Managements Association consortium president G Nagaiah. He also acknowledged that some colleges were using fake faculty to reduce financial burden.
