Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable display of community service, three young men from Bhadrak have transformed their passion for helping others into a significant social movement, assisting people with various needs.
Satyabrata Jena, Ananta Narayan Paikrai and Sukant Sahoo, all in their 30s, established the ‘Happy Club’ in 2010. It has now evolved into a 130-member strong organisation dedicated to various humanitarian causes.
What began as a small initiative by three college graduates has become a vital support system for the local community. The club’s activities gained momentum during the Covid-19 pandemic when they stepped up to assist those in need despite the prevalent fear and uncertainty.
“During the pandemic, when social distancing created barriers, we took it upon ourselves to help people,” said Satyabrata, one of the founders. The club distributed essential groceries, medicines, and other necessities to underprivileged families in Bhadrak and surrounding areas.
The club has expanded its services to include medical assistance, maintaining a network of volunteers in hospitals who coordinate with healthcare professionals and help those in need of assistance at medical facilities.
Sukant, an engineering graduate and another founding member of the club, highlights their crowdfunding initiatives through social media platforms to support patients requiring expensive medical treatments.
One of their recent success stories involves helping an accident victim with a broken rib cage who exhausted his insurance coverage at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. Through their crowdfunding efforts, the club was able to provide financial support for his ongoing treatment.
Food distribution remains a cornerstone of their activities. The club has successfully redistributed surplus food from local events to those in need, especially the poor at railway stations, temples, and medical facilities.
“We estimate having distributed over 30,000 meals to the underprivileged. We do not get funding from anyone. We arrange our own transportation and collect the surplus food for distribution,” said Sukant, emphasising the satisfaction derived from bringing smiles to people’s faces.
The club also regularly organises blood donation camps, demonstrating their commitment to comprehensive community welfare.
