Accident: Five hurt in 4-vehicle pile-up on NH-16 in heart of capital city | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Five persons were injured in an accident involving a truck, two cars and a motorcycle on National Highway-16 near Palasuni Square on Thursday evening.
According to witnesses, a Cuttack-bound truck from Bhubaneswar rammed into a car, which, in turn, hit another car in front and then a motorcycle. The impact of the collision was severe, causing significant damage to the vehicles and the injured persons were rushed to a nearby private hospital.Their condition is said to be stable. Police have detained the truck driver, identified as Manoj Pradhan of Bhanjanagar, and seized his vehicle.
The accident lead to an almost two-hour-long congestion throughout the stretch. Upon receiving information, the Mancheswar Police and the recovery van of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) rushed to the spot and while, the former cleared the area of traffic congestion, the recovery van removed the debris of the damaged vehicles.
Following the incident, locals blocked the highway, causing inconvenience to the commuters as NH-16 is one of the busiest roads running through the heart of the city.
“The authorities must take swift action to investigate the cause behind the accident and take appropriate measures to prevent such incidents. They should improve road signage, install speed-breakers and increase patrolling,” Tutu Baliarsingh, local resident who was a witness to the incident, said.
Palasuni square on NH-16 has a history of witnessing similar accidents. Just a few meters ahead of this particular spot, there is a designated blackspot and another one exists near Rasulgarh. “The blackspots should be clearly marked for the highway users,” Syed Maqbool Ali, former member of National Road Safety Council, said.
He added, “Today’s accident is a reminder of the importance of road safety. The authorities must take proactive steps to address the issues of blackspots and implement necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”
