Dental applicants in bind as Hyderabad college halts counselling last minute

HYDERABAD: The last-minute cancellation of counselling to senior residency training in Govt Dental College (GDC) and Hospital, Afzalgunj, has left as many as 56 applicants in a bind, with several of them knocking the door of the Director of Medical Education (DME) and other authorities since Monday.
The one-year senior residency training has 50 slots and enables the candidates to apply to govt educational or health institutions.

Left in the lurch

The controversy started after a decision was made by the health department to implement a multi-zonal (MZ) system in dental training, even though there is only one govt dental college in the state. Candidates alleged that when notification for the training programme was declared, there was no mention of the multi-zonal system.
However, the results reflected the division based on the MZ system. There are two multi-zones: MZ-1 and MZ-2.
In Telangana, there are seven zones, of which four are in MZ-1 and rest are in MZ-2. The seven zones are Kaleshwaram (Zone 1), Basara (Zone 2), Rajanna (Zone 3), Bhadradri (Zone 4), Yadadri (Zone 5), Charminar (Zone 6) and Jogulamba (Zone 7).
While zone 1, 2, 3 and 4 fall under MZ-1, typically referred as Kaleshwaram, the rest three fall under MZ-2, usually called Hyderabad.
To facilitate recruitments, the state govt decided to provide 95% reservations in all the state-level recruitment to Telangana people. “Even within the MZ system, suppose if an institute is in MZ-2, then students from that zone will benefit from the 95% reservation while 5% will be reserved for MZ-1 students and vice-versa,” a senior official of GDC told TOI.
A senior official from the Govt Dental College and Hospital told TOI, “The matter is pending with the Hyderabad collector and will be resolved soon. A fresh provisional merit list as per the govt rules is likely to be prepared after the collector reviews the current provisional merit list.”
