Last week, an explosion and green flames shook the Texas Tech University campus, causing a widespread power outage, the closure of the institution, and an early start to spring break.
On March 13, the university took to its official X (formally known as Twitter) and tweeted, “This is an emergency notification from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. An explosion as a substation has caused power outages at Texas Tech University and Heath Sciences Center. The Engineering key has been evacuated. We ask that the public avoid the campuses.”
It further tweeted that the university will begin the spring break for students early.
Texas Tech University’s FAQs
The university has recently released a set of FAQs addressing the campus closure, providing students with essential information.
According to the FAQs, the scheduled campus tours from March 17 to 20 will proceed as planned. Additionally, the university has outlined which facilities remain closed:
- University Recreation Centers
- Student Counseling Center: Closed. For psychological emergencies, students can call the crisis helpline at 806-742-5555 or access telehealth services via the SCC website.
- Student Health Services: Walk-in appointments are available from 2:00–4:30 p.m. on Monday. Appointments can be scheduled through the portal for any other day. Previously scheduled appointments will not be canceled. The pharmacy at Student Health Services will be open from 1:00–5:30 p.m. on Monday.
- University Libraries
- Museum of Texas Tech
- National Ranching Heritage Center
- Dining Services
The FAQs also clarify that students will not be penalized for missed or partially completed tests due to this emergency. Instructors have been granted flexibility to reschedule exams and modify the syllabus as needed.
The university has reiterated that the campus remains closed. However, students who need to retrieve essential belongings from academic or administrative buildings may do so briefly with an escort.

Today, the university has also tweeted that it is in continuous coordination with LP&L, Atoms and others to restore the campus operations. Faculty, staff and students should regularly check the FAQ page for the current information.
